7.1 - SkillsUSA report
SkillsUSA ran smoothly this year—despite one self-imposed challenge.
At orientation, I proposed switching from a traditional written test to an online format. While this created initial concern, we worked through questions collaboratively and implemented the shift mid-competition. In the end, nearly everyone appreciated the transition.
Beyond streamlining testing, we introduced the AIBD Design Technician Level One exam, which awards a downloadable PDF certificate to students scoring 70% or higher. While only six competitors earned medals, this allowed over 60% of attendees to leave with a tangible credential to support their future pursuits.
For the first time ever, we achieved 100% attendance, welcoming all 65 high school and college competitors.
With nearly 30 volunteer judges, managing the panel was a monumental task for Bernie Kern, who was facilitating the online event for the first time. Despite the logistical challenge, we submitted final scores to SkillsUSA staff just 15 minutes behind schedule. Next year, I plan to cap our judging panel at 12–15 to keep management seamless.
