I’ll treat this as a forensic reading, not a dunk:

first preserve the thread’s actual claims and sequence, then separate factual assertions, rhetoric/psychology, and theological claims, and finally answer each with sourced evidence and KJV Scripture.

Where something is interpretation rather than fact, I’ll label it that way.

The thread is still live and I’ve captured its text through post No. 43012932.

/x/ - Are Abrahamic Religions Based On Schizophrenia? - Paranormal - 4chan

A major pattern is already clear:

it repeatedly slides between three different questions—

“can religious experiences resemble psychosis?”

“were biblical figures clinically psychotic?”

“therefore religion was produced by schizophrenia”

—but those are not logically or medically equivalent claims.

The thread is still live and I’ve captured its text through post No. 43012932. A major pattern is already clear: it repeatedly slides between three different questions—“can religious experiences resemble psychosis?”, “were biblical figures clinically psychotic?”, and “therefore religion was produced by schizophrenia”—but those are not logically or medically equivalent claims.

Two factual corrections in the thread are especially important. The Josiah post contains a real interpretive problem worth discussing, but it misstates the narrative: Chronicles says Josiah was wounded by archers, brought to Jerusalem, and died there—not that he “died on the roadside.” And the “Paul dreamt up Jesus” claim runs directly against Paul’s own earliest letters, where he says apostles existed before him and names Peter and James, “the Lord’s brother.”

Soli Deo Gloria. I froze the live thread as it stood on September 28, 2026, through post No. 43012932. Because 4chan is ephemeral, this analysis is of that captured version; later replies would need a second pass. 4chan

For Scripture, I am using the supplied KJV Pure Cambridge Edition as the textual control. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Executive conclusion#

The thread begins with a reasonable question and repeatedly turns it into an unsupported conclusion.

There really is a meaningful overlap between some religious experiences and some psychotic phenomena. Auditory hallucinations, grandiose beliefs, religious delusions, experiences of external control, and intense perceived significance can occur in schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions. Religious themes are well documented in psychosis. World Health Organization

But five propositions must not be collapsed:

Hearing a voice ≠ schizophrenia. Psychosis ≠ schizophrenia. A religiously themed hallucination ≠ proof religion caused it. Phenomenological similarity ≠ identical causation. And finding psychiatric symptoms in a modern believer ≠ demonstrating that Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, Jesus, Paul, Muhammad, or another ancient figure had schizophrenia.

NIMH explicitly states that psychosis has many possible causes and that a person can experience psychosis without ever being diagnosed with schizophrenia. A systematic review likewise found non-clinical people who experience voices without the distress or need for care characteristic of clinical groups. National Institute of Mental Health

Conversely, the thread's mystical counterargument—“schizophrenia is really initiation into the spirit world”—is also unsupported. Psychiatry does not establish that voices are spirits; mystical reinterpretation does not establish that a recognized psychiatric disorder is merely spiritual resistance. WHO describes schizophrenia as a disorder involving substantial changes in perception, thought and behaviour, frequently affecting functioning, with interacting genetic, environmental and psychosocial factors rather than a single known cause. World Health Organization

Historically, the opening caricature is also wrong. The Hebrew Bible is a corpus assembled over many centuries rather than a book produced by one hallucinating founder; Cambridge describes its constituent books as written at various times during roughly the last millennium BCE. Cambridge University Press Christianity demonstrably existed before Paul's conversion in Paul's own earliest letters, and at least part of 1 Corinthians 15 is widely studied as pre-Pauline tradition. Cambridge University Press The Qur'an likewise has an oral and written transmission history rather than the simplistic sequence “man hears voice → writes whole book”; Cambridge notes oral recitation alongside writing during Muhammad's lifetime. Cambridge University Press

Most importantly for a Christian analysis, Scripture itself does not teach “I heard a supernatural voice, therefore believe me.” Deuteronomy tests prophetic claims; Deuteronomy 13 says even a successful sign is insufficient if the speaker turns Israel toward other gods; 1 John says to “try the spirits”; Galatians makes even an apparent angel subordinate to the received gospel. That is much closer to disciplined discernment than either blind credulity or psychiatric reductionism. The Holy Bible King James Versi… The Holy Bible King James Versi… The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Methodology#

I am applying the same standard to Christian, atheist, psychiatric, occult and Jungian claims:

  1. Preserve the proposition actually made. Memes, metaphors and factual propositions are not treated interchangeably.
  2. Separate phenomenology from ontology. “I heard a voice” describes an experience; “the voice was God,” “a demon,” “my unconscious,” or “a neurological event” identifies its cause. Those are separate claims.
  3. Do not diagnose ancient people from isolated literary episodes. Retrospective diagnosis is methodologically uncertain; medical historians warn that disease-specific labels often become speculation when clinical histories, examination and verification are unavailable. PubMed
  4. Use clinical definitions rather than internet definitions. Schizophrenia is not synonymous with eccentricity, religion, voice-hearing, mystical experience or an unpopular worldview. World Health Organization
  5. For historical claims, require chronology and transmission evidence. Similarity alone does not demonstrate borrowing, secret initiation or conspiracy.
  6. For Scripture, distinguish explicit text from interpretation. Immediate context first, Scripture with Scripture second, theological inference identified as inference.
  7. Do not psychologize one's opponent instead of answering him. Explaining why someone might believe proposition P does not establish whether P is true.
  8. Do not use uncertainty asymmetrically. “Psychiatry does not know everything” does not prove spirits; “spiritual claims can be mistaken” does not prove materialism.

Line-by-line forensic analysis#

Post 43011525 — the opening thesis#

The OP reduces the Abrahamic religions to an “old desert man hears voices → calls them God → invents a religion and book” sequence, then floats Masons, mystery schools, King James, prophets and apostles as competing authorship explanations. 4chan

“It is always this pattern”#

Finding: false generalization.

There is no single “Abrahamic religion origin mechanism.” Judaism, Christianity and Islam have different textual and institutional histories. Even within the Hebrew Bible, the books do not present one uniform revelatory mechanism: narrative, law, royal history, wisdom, poetry, prophecy, letters and apocalyptic material are different genres.

Historically, Cambridge summarizes the Hebrew Bible as literature produced across approximately a millennium. That alone rules out “one old man heard voices and wrote the Abrahamic text” as a serious history of the corpus. Cambridge University Press

“Old desert man hears voices”#

Finding: caricature masquerading as diagnosis.

Voice-hearing is one possible symptom of schizophrenia, but it does not establish schizophrenia. NIMH notes that psychosis may occur with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, medical conditions, sleep deprivation, medication or substances, and may occur without a later schizophrenia diagnosis. National Institute of Mental Health

More fundamentally, the biblical narratives are not clinical interviews. A literary statement that God spoke to a character gives us neither duration of symptoms, negative symptoms, cognitive changes, functional course, differential diagnosis, substance exposure, neurological history nor the other evidence needed for modern psychiatric diagnosis.

Retrospective-diagnosis literature specifically warns against converting fragmentary historical texts into precise disease diagnoses. One review calls the pastime unreliable where detailed clinical progression and reliable records are absent; another recommends, at most, cautious syndromic descriptions unless stronger evidence exists. PubMed

So the defensible sentence would be: some ancient religious narratives describe experiences that have phenomenological similarities to experiences which can occur in psychosis. That is very different from “therefore the person had schizophrenia.”

“He says it is God”#

This identifies the real philosophical question: how does one distinguish claimed revelation from error, pathology, deception or fabrication?

Psychiatry can investigate the human experience. It cannot run a laboratory assay that outputs “God” or “not God.” Likewise, theology cannot establish a supernatural origin merely because an experience felt transcendent.

The Bible itself recognizes this problem. It does not make subjective conviction sufficient.

“When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken...”
— Deuteronomy 18:22, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

And even fulfilled prediction is not enough, as we will see under Deuteronomy 13.

“Then a new religion and text appears”#

Again, historically inadequate. Texts can involve authors, editors, scribes, oral traditions, existing source material, communities and later canonization. The Hebrew Bible did. The New Testament did. The Qur'an had both oral and written transmission. Cambridge University Press

Calling this a “telephone game” is rhetorically vivid but methodologically poor because a telephone game deliberately removes durable records. Ancient manuscript cultures did precisely the opposite: they copied texts. Scribal variation exists, textual criticism is necessary, and no serious textual scholar says every manuscript copy is identical—but that is not equivalent to thousands of years of purely whispered memory.

“Masons / mystery initiates — like King James”#

Finding: unsupported and partly anachronistic.

King James I did not secretly sit down and author the King James Bible. Cambridge's history records that a royal letter contemplated 54 learned men; surviving lists identify 47 scholars organized into six companies at Westminster, Oxford and Cambridge. Cambridge University Press

The KJV translators themselves explain in the supplied edition that they worked from the Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament, compared earlier translations and repeatedly revised their work. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

As for the Masonic suggestion, the United Grand Lodge of England dates the first recorded initiation of an English speculative Freemason, Elias Ashmole, to 1646, and the first Grand Lodge to 1717. James I died in 1625. This does not prove that no earlier lodge culture or masonry-related tradition existed; it does show why simply calling James a modern-style anonymous Freemason without evidence is historically careless. United Grand Lodge of England

The thread gives no lodge record, correspondence, initiation document, manuscript evidence or transmission chain connecting “mystery schools” to KJV composition.

Post 43011528 — “God or demon?” and the Talmud screenshot#

This is one of the thread's more interesting images because the quotation is not fabricated. It is cropped out of an actual Talmudic narrative in Meilah 17b. 4chan

The context changes its significance considerably.

A demon called ben Temalyon offers to assist Rabbi Shimon ben Yohai in obtaining relief from an anti-Jewish decree. Rabbi Shimon does not celebrate receiving a demon as superior revelation. He laments that Hagar received angelic help while he is apparently being assisted only by a demon. The narrative then has the demon possess the emperor's daughter, after which Rabbi Shimon commands it out and obtains access to the decree, which is destroyed. Sefaria

Therefore the screenshot proves:

The Talmud contains this supernatural narrative.

It does not prove:

Rabbinic Judaism regards demons as God; biblical prophets derived revelation from demons; the Hebrew Bible was written by demon-guided schizophrenics; or the Abrahamic religions originated from this story.

Chronology alone destroys that causal inference: the Gemara is later rabbinic literature, not a source from which Genesis, Deuteronomy or the pre-Christian Hebrew Scriptures originated.

Biblical correction#

A Christian rebuttal should not answer, “demons cannot communicate, therefore nonsense.” Scripture itself contains categories of spiritual deception.

But the biblical answer is testing, not credulity:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God...”
— 1 John 4:1, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

And the next verses make John's immediate test Christological—confession concerning Jesus Christ come in the flesh. The verse is therefore not permission to classify every unusual voice or psychiatric event as a spirit.

Post 43011601 — schizophrenia as “spiritual initiation”#

The poster openly says they have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, then proposes that schizophrenic voices represent initiation by the spirit world, that schizophrenia lies behind most religions, and that theological contradictions result from difficult-to-verbalize experiences passed down through time. 4chan

The self-disclosure deserves respect, but it does not make the resulting metaphysical theory medically established.

“Voices are initiation from the spirit world”#

Finding: metaphysical interpretation, not clinical evidence.

Current medicine does not know one single cause of schizophrenia. WHO describes interaction among genetic and environmental factors, with psychosocial influences on onset and course. World Health Organization

Researchers have proposed mechanisms for auditory verbal hallucinations involving such processes as self/source monitoring, although reviews emphasize that the exact causal basis remains unsettled. PubMed Central (PMC)

Neither finding tells us “there are definitely no spirits.” It tells us that “spirit initiation” is not what schizophrenia medically means and has not been demonstrated as its cause.

“Schizophrenia is at the root of most religions”#

Finding: enormous causal claim with no causal evidence.

There unquestionably are religious delusions. A large meta-analysis across clinical populations estimated religious delusions at about 18.3%, lower than persecutory, reference and grandiose themes. PubMed

But that can support at least two causal directions:

religious ideas → available cultural vocabulary for psychotic experiences, or
psychotic experiences → new religious ideas.

Both may sometimes occur.

Research directly finds that hallucination and delusion content changes with culture and historical context. PubMed

Therefore seeing modern patients identify themselves with Jesus may actually demonstrate that pre-existing Christianity supplies symbols to psychosis, rather than that psychosis invented Christianity.

That is the thread's recurring causal reversal.

“People may experience themselves as God”#

Yes, grandiose and religious delusions can include extraordinary self-significance. That clinical fact is legitimate. PubMed

But this still does not retrospectively diagnose Jesus or anybody else. “Modern patient believes X” does not imply “ancient person associated with X had the same disorder.”

The “telephone game” theory#

Possible textual corruption has to be investigated manuscript by manuscript and tradition by tradition. It cannot be inferred from a psychiatric hypothesis.

The Hebrew Bible's complicated composition history is real; textual variants are real. Yet calling all of this “schizophrenic telephone” merely replaces textual criticism with a story for which the post supplies no textual evidence. Cambridge University Press

Posts 43011626 and 43011953 — “Yahweh is an alien”#

The follow-up image is particularly revealing. The JHVH-1 material belongs to the SubGenius-themed expansion of Steve Jackson Games' Illuminati: New World Order; Steve Jackson Games' own card list includes JHVH-1 as a SubGenius plot card. Steve Jackson Games

So the evidentiary chain is essentially:

modern satirical/fictional occult-pop-culture material says JHVH-1 is alien → therefore ancient YHWH was alien.

That is not historical evidence.

To establish an ancient extraterrestrial-YHWH thesis, we would need contemporaneous textual or archaeological material describing YHWH as a biological being originating from another physical planet, plus a defensible translation and historical context. A late game card cannot supply that evidence.

The legitimate distinction is:

The Bible describes God as non-human and heavenly/transcendent.

That is not synonymous with modern extraterrestrial organism. Turning “not an earthly human” into “space alien” is a category substitution.

Post 43011634 — circumcision and an unspecified abuse accusation#

The thread says Abrahamic religion is based on circumcision and an unspecified sexual-abuse allegation. 4chan

The second accusation has no identified source, institution, historical period or evidence, so it cannot responsibly be fact-checked beyond saying: the post has not established it.

Circumcision is different because there is explicit biblical material.

“This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.”
— Genesis 17:10, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

So denying that circumcision is important in the Abrahamic covenant would be evasive.

But “circumcision exists in Genesis” does not entail “Abrahamic religion originated because of circumcision.” The practice is documented outside biblical Israel and in ancient Egypt as well; it was not uniquely invented by the biblical tradition. Iranica Online

And Christian Scripture explicitly prevents circumcision from becoming the thread's universal Abrahamic key. Paul says of the Greek Titus:

“But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.”
— Galatians 2:3, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Thus the meme correctly notices a biblical ritual and then gives that ritual a psychological genealogy the text itself does not provide.

Post 43011637 — “bastardized ancient knowledge”#

Finding: too vague to test. 4chan

Which ancient knowledge? Egyptian? Mesopotamian? Canaanite? Greek mystery cults? Persian religion? A primordial tradition? What surviving document contains the supposed original doctrine? When did borrowing occur? Through whom? Which linguistic features demonstrate dependence?

Until those variables are supplied, the theory can accommodate virtually anything and therefore explains very little.

Real influence among ancient cultures certainly happened. Cambridge notes that Israel existed amid surrounding imperial cultures rather than in a vacuum. Cambridge University Press But cultural interaction is not the same proposition as “all Abrahamic religion is corrupted secret doctrine.”

The latter needs its own evidence.

Post 43011993 — reaction GIF / objection to the word schizophrenia#

There is no substantive factual argument to test here. 4chan

It does illustrate a methodological point: objecting emotionally to psychiatric terminology does not answer misuse of that terminology. The correct response is not “never mention schizophrenia” but use the diagnosis accurately.

Post 43011998 — Deuteronomy, false prophecy, Josiah and Huldah#

This is the strongest post in the thread because it finally proposes an actual textual test and an apparent counterexample. It also contains several significant errors. 4chan

“A literal spiritual transmission is indistinguishable from schizophrenia”#

Too strong.

There can be phenomenological overlap. That much is fair.

But schizophrenia involves a broader pattern potentially including persistent delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking/behaviour, negative symptoms and cognitive difficulties, together with clinical course and functional consequences. World Health Organization

And voice-hearing occurs among people who do not require psychiatric care. PubMed Central (PMC)

Therefore “indistinguishable” is false unless the speaker means the much weaker proposition that some individual experiences may initially look similar without further context.

That weaker statement is true.

Deuteronomy 18:22#

The post's quotation captures the basic point, although it is not the KJV wording.

The supplied KJV reads:

“When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously...”
— Deuteronomy 18:22 The Holy Bible King James Versi…

So the thread is basically correct on the negative test: a failed prediction made as God's word is disqualifying in the passage's covenantal context.

“If it happens, therefore it was God”#

This is where the thread misreads Scripture.

Deuteronomy 13 explicitly considers a prophet whose sign does happen:

“And the sign or the wonder come to pass...”

yet if he then says,

“Let us go after other gods...”

Israel is told:

“Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet...” The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Thus Scripture's own logic is:

Failure can falsify a claimed prophecy; successful prediction does not automatically authenticate its divine source.

That is a much more sophisticated epistemology than the thread's binary.

The New Testament adds the same principle in another form:

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you... let him be accursed.”
— Galatians 1:8, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

The messenger's apparent supernatural status does not settle the truth of the message.

“If a spirit predicts correctly, probably demons”#

That conclusion is not actually stated in Deuteronomy 18.

Christian Scripture does contain categories of deceptive spirits and false signs, but accuracy alone does not give us a species-identification algorithm. First John's immediate spiritual test is doctrinal and Christological. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

So “correct prediction = demon” is as unwarranted as “correct prediction = God” without the rest of the biblical framework.

Josiah and Huldah#

Now the genuinely difficult part.

Huldah says:

“I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place.”
— 2 Kings 22:20, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Josiah subsequently dies violently.

There is a prima facie interpretive tension here. It should not be hidden.

But the 4chan account materially embellishes what happened.

Second Chronicles says:

“And the archers shot at king Josiah... for I am sore wounded.”

His servants then put him in another chariot:

“and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died...” The Holy Bible King James Versi…

So “face full of arrows” is not stated, and “died on the roadside” is directly contradicted by Chronicles.

Kings has a slightly different presentation, saying Pharaoh-nechoh slew him at Megiddo and his servants carried him “dead from Megiddo” to Jerusalem. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

That difference between Kings and Chronicles should itself be acknowledged rather than harmonized away.

What about “in peace”?

One interpretive reading understands the following clause—“thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place”—as defining the promised peace: Josiah would die before Judah's national catastrophe, not necessarily die nonviolently. A recent study likewise interprets Huldah's “peace” in relation to his being spared Jerusalem's later destruction. KCI

Historical-critical scholars also recognize genuine literary tension. Marvin Sweeney argues that the present Josiah narrative presupposes his death and exhibits signs of literary reworking in light of his death and the coming exile. OUP Academic

The responsible conclusion therefore is not:

“No problem whatsoever.”

Nor is it:

“Huldah obviously failed, case closed.”

It is: there is a real lexical/narrative tension around “in peace”; one contextual interpretation reads the promise primarily as exemption from the coming national disaster, while some historical-critical accounts see compositional reworking behind the present narrative. The thread compounds the issue with factual embellishments not found in either biblical account.

That is where careful Bible study should land.

Post 43012151 — Jung, individuation and “schizophrenia is a mindset”#

This reply begins with one important truth and then builds an unsupported system upon it. 4chan

“Not everyone who hears voices has schizophrenia”#

Correct.

This is one of the strongest statements anywhere in the thread. A systematic review identified non-clinical voice-hearers who experienced auditory verbal hallucinations without the distress or need for care found in clinical populations. PubMed Central (PMC)

NIMH also explicitly says psychosis may occur without schizophrenia. National Institute of Mental Health

“The others are enlightened initiates”#

Not established.

The fact that clinical diagnosis does not exhaust every human interpretation of an experience does not make a preferred supernatural interpretation true.

This is an argument from diagnostic underdetermination:

medicine cannot fully explain X → therefore my spiritual explanation of X is established.

The second proposition does not follow.

Jungian individuation and the collective unconscious#

“Individuation,” “archetypes” and “collective unconscious” belong to a Jungian interpretive framework. They are not current diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia.

One may find that framework philosophically or therapeutically meaningful. What cannot responsibly be done is silently redefine a medical diagnosis around it.

“Schizophrenia occurs when you resist divine communion”#

This creates a self-sealing belief system.

Accept the voices → you are enlightened.

Question them → your questioning itself demonstrates schizophrenia.

Seek a medical explanation → that proves materialist blindness.

A theory arranged this way has difficulty encountering evidence that could count against itself.

That is a major epistemological warning sign regardless of whether the theory is atheist, Christian, occult, Jungian or anything else.

“Schizophrenia is a mindset”#

Clinically false.

WHO describes a serious mental disorder associated with substantial functional impairment and a complex causal picture; it is not defined as a philosophical attitude chosen toward one's unconscious. World Health Organization

That does not mean spirituality has no place in recovery. Recent systematic review evidence is more nuanced: positive religious coping can associate with wellbeing and treatment engagement, whereas negative religious coping can correlate with worse outcomes. PubMed

So the binary “medicine or mysticism” is unnecessary.

Post 43012268 — the inaccessible X link#

The poster presents an X status as the definitive answer but supplies no argument in the 4chan text itself. 4chan

I could not retrieve the underlying X content through the available source path, so I am not going to pretend I fact-checked a video I could not inspect.

Methodologically its status in this audit is simply:

unverified external evidence.

If the clip becomes independently accessible, its actual claims can be extracted and checked individually.

Post 43012270 — “all religions are schizophrenia”#

As literal medicine, this is meaningless.

Schizophrenia is diagnosed in people. “Religion” is not a patient with cognition, duration of symptoms, occupational functioning and a differential diagnosis.

As metaphor—“religion resembles collective madness”—it may function rhetorically, but metaphors do not establish psychiatric causation. 4chan

Post 43012276 — the Abraham circumcision meme#

The joke compresses Abraham's circumcision into an unexplained command voice. 4chan

This illustrates the thread's representativeness heuristic: find an element that looks superficially like a modern symptom, then infer the full diagnosis.

But Genesis 17 gives circumcision an extensive covenantal narrative framework. Whether one accepts that framework theologically is a separate question. The source itself is not a clinical case report about a man suffering disorganized behaviour after an isolated auditory hallucination. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Retrospective psychiatric diagnosis requires more evidence than:

ancient character reports divine speech + performs unusual ritual = schizophrenia.

Otherwise almost any ancient visionary, poet, oracle, shaman, philosopher or dreamer could be diagnosed from a single sentence.

Post 43012466 — “Paul invented Jesus”#

This is the thread's clearest historical error. 4chan

Paul himself says:

“Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me...”
— Galatians 1:17

Then:

“I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter... But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother.”
— Galatians 1:18–19 The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Even if one approaches Paul entirely historically and does not assume inspiration, this is very early first-person evidence that Paul believed:

Christian apostles preceded him; Peter preceded him; James was already an important Christian figure; a Christian movement existed for Paul to persecute before he joined it.

Romans even mentions Andronicus and Junia as being “in Christ before me.” The Holy Bible King James Versi…

First Corinthians 15 is stronger still:

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received...”

Paul then lists appearances to Cephas, the Twelve, James and others before saying:

“And last of all he was seen of me also...” The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Modern New Testament scholarship accordingly discusses 1 Corinthians 15:3–5 as a pre-Pauline formula—material Paul received rather than invented at the moment of writing. Cambridge University Press

This does not prove the resurrection happened. Historical evidence that a claim predates Paul and theological proof of the claim are different questions.

But it decisively damages the narrower allegation that Paul simply dreamed up Jesus and then Jews started Christianity afterward.

Paul himself presents himself as a late arrival to an already existing movement.

The “grifter” accusation is similarly unsupported. Establishing deliberate fraud requires evidence about knowledge and intent. Being mistaken, being visionary, being sincere, being deceptive and being mentally ill are different hypotheses. The thread repeatedly treats them as interchangeable whenever convenient.

Interestingly, Paul's own text does not display indifference to truth. He explicitly says that if Christ was not raised, Christian preaching and faith are vain and the apostles are false witnesses. The Holy Bible King James Versi… Whether his claim succeeds is debatable; what cannot fairly be said is that the text has no concern for whether the claim is true.

Post 43012507 — the long copypasta#

This is evidentiary noise rather than an argument. 4chan

It is worth retaining in a forensic transcript because deleting irrelevant material can falsely sanitize how an anonymous thread actually developed. But it receives zero evidentiary weight on the schizophrenia/religion question.

This is also where platform psychology matters. Suler's classic work on online disinhibition identifies anonymity, invisibility and related factors that can increase unusual self-disclosure and acting-out online. That does not diagnose 4chan users; it explains why anonymous boards often produce a mixture of sincere testimony, provocation, role-play, memes and aggression. Sage Journals

Post 43012582 — Judaism as “communal schizophrenia” and “criminal syndicate”#

There is no argument here—only a collective accusation. 4chan

Calling Judaism “schizophrenia” repeats the medical category error: a religion and ethnoreligious population cannot be clinically diagnosed as one patient.

Calling Jews or Judaism an “ancient organized criminal syndicate” requires evidence of an identifiable organization, criminal acts, command structure, continuity, participants and documentation. None is supplied.

It is therefore an anti-Jewish collective allegation, not a fact-checkable case supported by evidence.

A Christian critique is especially obligated not to let theological disagreement turn into ethnic collective guilt. Paul's warning to Gentile Christians is:

“Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee.”
— Romans 11:18, KJV

Christianity can disagree profoundly with Jewish theology while still refusing ancestry-as-explanation.

Post 43012767 — “God talked only to me; obey me”#

This is a recognizable critique of authoritarian revelation claims, but it is not an accurate description of the Bible as a whole. 4chan

Biblically, alleged revelation is repeatedly exposed to communal tests. Deuteronomy publicly specifies criteria for prophets. First John tells churches to test spiritual claims. Paul invokes earlier apostles and other witnesses rather than saying no one else has access to the claim.

First Corinthians 15 even reports an appearance to “above five hundred brethren at once.” The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Historical method cannot simply assume Paul's reported 500 independently proves the resurrection; we do not possess 500 separate depositions. But the textual point is decisive: the Christian claim as Paul formulates it is not “God privately told me and nobody else.”

The post's alternative explanation—“lies and stupidity”—also commits the same error it thinks it is avoiding. Deliberate lying, intellectual error, religious experience, mental illness and myth development are distinct explanations requiring distinct evidence.

Post 43012841 — ulterior motives and harmful command voices#

The “ulterior motives” claim is too nonspecific to evaluate. Motives must be demonstrated person by person. 4chan

The second point is more useful: a person should not obey a perceived command to harm somebody merely because it presents itself as authoritative. As a practical safety principle, that is sound.

But the poster then turns the safety rule into a metaphysical identification: harmful command → non-benevolent spiritual entity.

Clinical science cannot establish that final step.

Biblically, harmfulness is also not the Bible's only discernment criterion. Deuteronomy 13 tests covenantal allegiance; 1 John 4 tests teaching concerning Christ; Galatians 1 subordinates even an angelic appearance to the gospel. The Holy Bible King James Versi… The Holy Bible King James Versi… The Holy Bible King James Versi…

So both clinical and biblical reasoning are richer than “nice voice = good spirit / nasty voice = bad spirit.”

Post 43012843 — bare “yes”#

No evidence is added. Agreement is not corroboration merely because another anonymous account posts it. 4chan

Ten anonymous assertions do not become ten independent sources if they all derive from the same meme, prior post or cultural assumption.

Post 43012871 — “is schizophrenia more than you're told?”#

As a question, this is legitimate. 4chan

Medical knowledge is incomplete. WHO explicitly says research has not identified a single cause of schizophrenia. World Health Organization

But incomplete knowledge creates permission to investigate, not permission to fill the gap with one's favorite explanation.

“Science does not know everything about schizophrenia” and “therefore schizophrenia is supernatural initiation” are separated by a very large evidentiary gap.

The same principle applies in the opposite direction: “some visions have neurological/psychiatric explanations” does not prove “therefore no genuine divine revelation has ever occurred.”

Both are arguments from an explanatory gap.

Post 43012932 — people with schizophrenia claiming to be Jesus/Messiah#

This is based on a real phenomenon but draws the wrong inference. 4chan

Grandiose and religious delusions are documented in psychosis. A large review found religious delusions across clinical populations, while other studies show that their content varies substantially according to culture and historical conditions. PubMed

But consider the causal direction.

A modern English-speaking patient already lives in a world where Jesus and Messiah are culturally available identities. Their appearance inside psychosis could therefore show:

culture → content of psychosis.

The poster assumes instead:

psychosis today contains Jesus → Jesus originated in psychosis.

That inference simply does not follow.

Analogously, a patient believing themselves to be Napoleon does not demonstrate that Napoleon was invented by schizophrenia.

That is probably the cleanest rebuttal to the final post.

The psychological architecture of the thread#

Several recurring cognitive moves deserve attention without diagnosing any anonymous participant.

The first is representativeness: prophetic voice-hearing resembles a symptom associated with schizophrenia, so the two are treated as identical. Yet medicine expressly recognizes voice-hearing outside schizophrenia. PubMed Central (PMC)

The second is content-source confusion. Religion appearing inside psychosis is treated as evidence psychosis generated religion. But research shows religious-delusional content is culturally variable. Existing religious symbols can furnish the material of delusions. PubMed

The third is the genetic fallacy. Even suppose, purely hypothetically, that an ancient prophet suffered schizophrenia. That fact by itself would not establish whether every proposition he uttered was false. Truth claims still have to be evaluated. A mathematician with psychosis can state a correct equation; a mentally healthy person can confidently state a falsehood.

The fourth is self-sealing reasoning in the opposite, mystical direction: accepting the experience proves enlightenment; resisting it proves pathology; medical disagreement proves materialist blindness. Such a model protects itself from falsification.

The fifth is motivated reasoning, which is not peculiar to skeptics or believers. Kunda's classic review describes how motivations can affect which beliefs and inferential strategies people retrieve and evaluate while still producing apparently reasonable justifications. A Christian can do this; so can an atheist, occultist, Jungian or psychiatrist. DOI.org

The sixth is anonymous-platform amplification. Disinhibition can increase both candid disclosure and hostile/extreme speech online. That means a 4chan thread should neither be dismissed wholesale nor treated as a representative clinical or sociological sample. Sage Journals

And the seventh is stigma masquerading as argument. Using “schizophrenic” as a synonym for false, foolish, evil or conspiratorial weakens the analysis. WHO specifically notes the intense stigma and discrimination already faced by people with schizophrenia. World Health Organization

What Scripture actually gives us for discernment#

Passage

What the text actually supplies

What it does not supply

Deuteronomy 18:20–22

A claimed word of the LORD that fails is presumptuous. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

“Every successful prediction is from God.”

Deuteronomy 13:1–5

Even a fulfilled sign does not override fidelity to God. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

“Accuracy alone authenticates a prophet.”

1 Thessalonians 5:20–21

“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Either gullibility or blanket rejection.

1 John 4:1–3

Spiritual claims are to be tested; immediate context is Christological. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

A generic technique for deciding whether every auditory experience is paranormal.

Galatians 1:8

Even an apparent angel cannot overturn the received gospel. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

“Supernatural-looking messenger = divine authority.”

1 Corinthians 15

Paul claims received tradition, earlier witnesses and consequences if resurrection is false. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Automatic historical proof merely because Paul asserts it.

This matters because the thread repeatedly assumes Christian epistemology is:

voice → God → obey.

The biblical corpus itself is plainly more suspicious of claimed supernatural authority than that caricature allows.

The central psychiatric question, stated correctly#

The scientifically respectable hypothesis is not “religion is schizophrenia.”

It is something closer to:

To what extent do anomalous perceptual experiences, psychosis-spectrum traits, culturally mediated interpretations, altered states, charismatic authority and subsequent social transmission contribute to the historical formation of particular religious traditions?

That is a legitimate interdisciplinary research question.

It could be investigated with psychiatry, anthropology, textual criticism, comparative religion, cognitive science and history.

But even then we must distinguish:

experience: someone reports a voice or vision;
clinical status: whether that person met criteria for a disorder;
etiology: what produced the experience;
interpretation: what the person thought it meant;
historical transmission: what later communities did with it;
truth: whether the religious proposition itself is true.

The 4chan thread repeatedly moves from the first item directly to the sixth.

That leap is the central methodological failure.

Final assessment of the thread's main thesis#

There is enough truth in the thread to make it initially persuasive.

True: schizophrenia can involve voices, religious delusions, grandiosity and unusual self-experiences. World Health Organization

True: not every voice-hearer has schizophrenia. PubMed Central (PMC)

True: psychiatry does not possess a complete single-cause theory of schizophrenia. World Health Organization

True: ancient religious claims should not receive automatic immunity from psychological investigation.

True: Huldah/Josiah presents an actual interpretive difficulty worth discussing rather than suppressing. The Holy Bible King James Versi…

But the thread has not established that schizophrenia created Judaism, Christianity or Islam; that Yahweh is an extraterrestrial; that schizophrenia is spirit initiation; that King James was a mystery-school/Masonic author of Scripture; that Paul invented Jesus; that fulfilled predictions automatically prove God; or that an entire religion or ethnic community can be clinically described as schizophrenia.

Those conclusions require evidence the thread does not provide.

The strongest biblical methodological answer remains strikingly balanced:

“Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21, KJV The Holy Bible King James Versi…

Not believe every voice.

Not medicalize every prophet.

Not spiritualize every hallucination.

Not dismiss every extraordinary claim.

Hear it. Identify exactly what is being claimed. Search it. Test it. Distinguish the text from what we have added to the text. Retain only what survives.

Soli Deo Gloria.

Yes. The paper is already strong as a rebuttal, but I’d add several sections that turn it into a general methodology for evaluating revelation, psychosis, and historical religious claims, rather than merely answering one 4chan thread.

  1. A formal “levels of claim” framework. This may be the single most valuable addition. Separate: phenomenology (“a person reports hearing a voice”), psychiatric classification (“the experience occurred as part of schizophrenia”), causal mechanism (“the brain produced the experience in manner X”), metaphysical interpretation (“God/demon/spirit caused it”), historical claim (“this experience founded religion Y”), and truth claim (“the message communicated was true”). The thread continuously jumps across these levels without argument. Put them in a diagram or table and repeatedly ask: What evidence licenses the move from one level to the next?
  2. A section titled something like “What Would Actually Be Required to Diagnose an Ancient Prophet?” This would demolish the retrospective-diagnosis move methodologically rather than rhetorically. Medical historians warn that retrospective diagnosis often becomes speculation when primary clinical information is absent; one proposed compromise is to describe possible syndromes without confidently assigning a modern disease entity. PubMed Apply that explicitly: to diagnose schizophrenia one would want longitudinal course, impairment, disorganization, negative symptoms, mood history, substances, neurological conditions, sleep states, trauma, collateral testimony, and so forth. A verse saying “the word of the LORD came unto...” cannot supply that dataset.
  3. A much deeper “voice-hearing is not schizophrenia” section. The evidence here is stronger than we used initially. A systematic review found clinically healthy/nonclinical voice-hearers whose experiences can resemble clinical hallucinations perceptually, while differing particularly in distress, control, negative content, functional problems and associated psychopathology. PubMed Central (PMC) A newer qualitative study likewise emphasizes that nonclinical voice-hearing complicates any simple voice = disease equation. PubMed Central (PMC) There is even research specifically comparing spiritual voice-hearing with voices in psychosis, finding similarities alongside meaningful differences. PubMed Central (PMC) This deserves its own literature-review subsection.
  4. A biblical taxonomy of false revelation. This could become one of the strongest theological portions because Scripture itself does not reduce erroneous supernatural claims to one mechanism. Jeremiah 23 describes prophets speaking “a vision of their own heart,” claiming dreams and saying “He saith” when God had not sent them. The Holy Bible King James Versi… In 1 Kings 22, the narrative instead depicts a “lying spirit” associated with Ahab's prophets, while Micaiah publicly places his own prediction at risk: “If thou return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me.” The Holy Bible King James Versi… These are materially different categories. A Christian model therefore needs room for at least truthful revelation, deliberate falsehood, self-deception/false imagination, false dreams, spiritual deception, and ordinary human error—without automatically labeling all of them schizophrenia.
  5. Add the remarkable epistemology of 1 Corinthians 14. Paul does not describe Christian prophecy as “one visionary speaks and everyone obeys.” He says, “Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge,” and immediately stresses intelligibility, order and communal evaluation. The Holy Bible King James Versi… That directly undermines the thread's caricature of biblical revelation as unquestionable private voice-hearing. It fits beautifully beside Deuteronomy 13, Deuteronomy 18, 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21 and 1 John 4:1.
  6. Add competing hypotheses instead of Christianity-vs-schizophrenia. For every visionary report, give an explicit hypothesis set: deliberate fabrication; sincere mistake; dream/sleep phenomenon; neurological event; substance effect; psychiatric disorder; culturally patterned nonclinical anomalous experience; literary/theological construction by a later author; genuine supernatural event. Then say what evidence would increase or decrease each hypothesis. This prevents both sides from committing a false dichotomy. The important methodological principle is that eliminating one naturalistic explanation does not automatically prove revelation, while establishing some psychiatric resemblance does not automatically disprove revelation.
  7. Develop the genetic-fallacy argument. This should be explicit because it is philosophically devastating to much of the thread. Even if—for argument's sake—a prophet had schizophrenia, that fact alone would not tell us whether a proposition he uttered was true. The psychological origin of a belief and its truth value are separate questions. Conversely, sincerity and psychological health do not make a person's theology true. This gives the paper symmetry: mental illness is neither an automatic falsifier nor an authentication mechanism.
  8. Add culture → psychosis as the reverse-causation problem. This needs its own section because it answers the “schizophrenics think they are Jesus, therefore Jesus came from schizophrenia” argument cleanly. Religious and grandiose delusions genuinely occur in psychosis, but their content is embedded in cultural material already available to the patient. Reviews find religious themes in clinical delusions, while the broader research literature recognizes religion/spirituality as capable of functioning positively, negatively or neutrally depending on the individual. PubMed The analogy we used—believing one is Napoleon does not imply Napoleon originated in psychosis—should probably become a boxed illustration.
  9. Add a “falsifiability and asymmetric skepticism” section. This would expose both errors in the thread. The reductionist theory becomes unfalsifiable when every religious experience is defined beforehand as pathology. The occult/Jungian theory becomes unfalsifiable when accepting voices proves initiation and resisting them proves spiritual blockage. A good explanatory theory needs conceivable evidence that could count against it. Then apply the same rule to Christian apologetics: we should not protect a favored interpretation from contrary textual or historical evidence either. Jeremiah itself condemns prophets who simply announce their own internal ideas as God's speech. The Holy Bible King James Versi…
  10. Finish with an evidence-grading appendix. For every significant 4chan assertion, assign categories such as documented fact / plausible inference / disputed interpretation / unsupported speculation / contradicted by primary evidence / unfalsifiable claim. Include the original post number, exact claim, primary source, strongest supporting evidence, strongest counter-evidence, and confidence level. That transforms the paper from polemic into something another researcher can audit.

I would also substantially expand the Josiah/Huldah case study rather than hide it. It is precisely the sort of difficult text that demonstrates methodological integrity. Likewise, Jeremiah vs. Hananiah would make an excellent second biblical case study: Hananiah publicly claims prophetic authority, Jeremiah says “The LORD hath not sent thee,” predicts his death within that year, and the narrative reports that Hananiah died that same year. The Holy Bible King James Versi… Whether one accepts the narrative's theological conclusion is separate from recognizing that the text itself presents publicly contestable rival prophetic claims, not merely “somebody heard a voice.”

The paper's controlling thesis could ultimately become stronger than “the 4chan thread is wrong.” Something like:

Religious experience and psychopathology can overlap phenomenologically, but phenomenological resemblance alone cannot establish psychiatric diagnosis, historical causation, metaphysical identity, or theological truth. Each inference requires its own evidence; biblical literature itself recognizes competing revelatory claims and repeatedly demands discernment rather than mere subjective certainty.

That gives us a paper worth keeping even after the original thread disappears.

I’ll turn this into a coherent paper rather than a stitched-together rebuttal: the thread will be the narrative spine, and each claim will be handled through four lenses—what the source actually says, what history/medicine can establish, what remains interpretation, and what Scripture itself says. I’ll also add a short methods section up front so the reader can see exactly how conclusions are being reached.

One addition is proving especially useful: recent work comparing people with schizophrenia to nonclinical voice-hearers finds that the sensory experience of voices can be remarkably similar, while distress, control, paranoia, cognitive deficits, negative symptoms, and functional impairment differ substantially. That lets the paper say something more precise than either “voices are schizophrenia” or “voices are spiritual initiation.”

The historical side also strengthens the paper rather than merely “defending” the Bible. The Josiah/Huldah passage really does contain a recognized interpretive tension, and current scholarship treats it as such; meanwhile the thread’s description of Josiah dying “on the roadside” is simply not what Chronicles says. Keeping both facts in view is exactly the tone I’m using throughout.

I’ve rebuilt it as a paper rather than a collection of rebuttal notes. The thread stays visible throughout, but the argument now moves naturally between psychiatry, historical method, psychology, textual history, and Scripture without pretending those disciplines can answer one another’s questions by themselves.

This version is structured so it can stand independently after the 4chan thread disappears: the thread provides the case study, but the paper's real subject is how to reason responsibly about revelation and psychopathology. A next editorial pass could turn this into a formal academic edition with Chicago-style footnotes, abstract/keywords, numbered bibliography, and a source appendix preserving every thread post verbatim.
