“Planets Are Lights”: A Scientific, Logical, Psychological, and Biblical Examination of an Ambiguous Cosmological Claim


Abstract


The statement “Planets are lights” is grammatically simple but semantically underdetermined. In one ordinary observational sense, it is true: planets appear as points of light in the night sky, and most of their visible light is reflected sunlight. In a stronger ontological sense—“planets are nothing more than immaterial lights,” “planets are self-luminous stars,” or “planets are merely lights embedded in a solid firmament”—the statement is false and contradicted by several independent forms of observation.


This paper distinguishes appearance from physical nature, examines ancient terminology and modern astronomy, identifies the rhetorical advantages of an underspecified claim, and evaluates common biblical arguments used to support it. Scripture calls celestial bodies “lights” because they give or govern light from the earthbound observer’s perspective. It does not teach that every object called a light is composed only of light, nor does it deny that planets are substantial created bodies. The proper biblical response is neither to force modern astrophysics into every ancient verse nor to convert phenomenological language into an alternative physical cosmology.


I. The claim under examination


“Planets are lights.”


Because the sentence contains only three words, a responsible rebuttal must begin by asking what proposition is actually being asserted.


It could mean:


  1. Planets look like lights from Earth.
  2. Planets provide visible light in the night sky.
  3. Planets reflect light from the Sun.
  4. Planets emit some electromagnetic radiation.
  5. The Bible categorizes planets among the heavenly lights.
  6. Planets are self-luminous objects like stars.
  7. Planets possess no solid, liquid, gaseous or physically extended substance and are literally only lights.
  8. Modern planetary astronomy is fabricated, and what observers call planets are nearby luminaries in or upon the firmament.


The first five propositions can be affirmed with qualifications. The last three require substantial correction.


An effective but unreliable rhetorical technique is to state only the ambiguous version and allow different audiences to supply different meanings.


A critic answers the stronger claim, after which the speaker retreats to the weaker one:


“I only said they are lights.


You can see them shining.”


This is sometimes called a motte-and-bailey structure. The easily defended “motte” is that planets appear luminous. The controversial “bailey” is that planets are not physical worlds. The claim must therefore be defined before it can be properly assessed.


II. A concise verdict


The most precise answer is:


Planets are physical astronomical bodies that can appear as lights. In visible wavelengths they generally shine principally by reflecting light from a star, although they also emit thermal radiation and may produce other forms of electromagnetic radiation.


Thus:


  • “Planets appear as lights” — true.
  • “Planets reflect light” — true.
  • “Planets emit no radiation at all” — false.
  • “Planets are self-luminous in the same way as stars” — generally false.
  • “Planets are nothing but light” — false.
  • “Calling them lights proves they are not physical bodies” — logically invalid.


NASA explains that planets do not shine in visible light like stars; their visible brightness is primarily reflected sunlight. Earth itself would appear as a star-like luminous point when seen from Mars.


III. Word-by-word analysis


1. “Planets”


The word planet derives from Greek terminology associated with “wanderers” or “wandering stars.” Ancient observers noticed that certain bright objects changed position relative to the more stable stellar background. The name described their observed motion, not a conclusion that they were physically identical to stars.


Historically, the category changed as astronomy improved. Ancient systems sometimes included the Sun and Moon among the wandering luminaries. Following the Copernican transformation, Earth was recognized as a planet, while the Sun was classified as a star and the Moon as Earth’s satellite.


For the Solar System, the International Astronomical Union presently defines a planet using orbital, gravitational and dynamical criteria. NASA identifies eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.


The exact taxonomic definition remains debated at its edges, especially for exoplanets, rogue planets and dwarf planets. But those classification debates do not support the proposition that planets are immaterial lights. They concern how to categorize substantial astronomical objects according to mass, shape, orbit and dynamical behavior.


2. “Are”


The verb “are” expresses identity or predication.


There is an important difference between saying:


planets appear as lights;

planets produce or reflect light;

planets are sources of detectable light;

planets are literally made only of light.


Ordinary language often uses identity statements loosely:


“The city is a sea of lights.”


“The Moon is a light in the night.”


“The candle is a light.”


“That object in the sky is a light.”


None of these necessarily describes the material composition of the object. “Light” may refer to function, appearance or effect rather than ontology.


The entire debate may therefore turn on an equivocation:


moving from “light” as a luminous appearance to “light” as the complete substance of the object.


3. “Lights”


The noun light has several meanings:


electromagnetic radiation visible to the human eye;

a source of illumination;

a luminous-looking object;

reflected brightness;

a lamp or luminary;

metaphorical knowledge, goodness or revelation.


A traffic light is called a “light,” although it contains glass, metal, circuitry and housing. A lighthouse is “a light,” but it is not composed solely of photons. The Moon is commonly called a night light even though its visible brightness is reflected sunlight.


Therefore:


Calling something “a light” does not establish that light is its sole physical substance.


That conclusion would require an additional premise:


Every object described as a light is composed only of light.


That premise is demonstrably false.


IV. What planets actually are


1. Planets are physically extended bodies


The planets display measurable:


diameter;

mass;

gravitational effects;

rotation;

orbital motion;

atmospheres in many cases;

surface or cloud features;

temperature;

chemical composition;

magnetic behavior;

interactions with moons, rings, spacecraft and sunlight.


The Solar System includes rocky terrestrial planets, gas giants and ice giants. NASA’s Solar System overview distinguishes one star from eight planets, numerous moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets.


These conclusions do not depend on one photograph, one government or one space agency. They arise from mutually reinforcing observations made over centuries by different nations, observatories, universities, amateur astronomers and independent instruments.


2. Visible planetary light is mostly reflected sunlight


A star such as the Sun produces enormous energy through nuclear processes. A planet is not generally powered as a visible-light source in the same manner. Its visible brightness normally comes from starlight reflected by its atmosphere, clouds or surface.


Venus is especially bright because its thick cloud cover reflects a large portion of the sunlight reaching it, combined with its relative proximity and changing phase.


Earth also reflects sunlight. NASA visualizations show that clouds, ice and snow reflect more sunlight than darker surfaces such as oceans.


3. “Reflected light” remains light


It would be incorrect to answer, “Planets are not lights at all.” From the viewpoint of an observer, the photons arriving from a planet really are light.


The correction is more exact:


The detected light is not the whole planet. It carries information from and about the planet.


When sunlight strikes Mars, some wavelengths are absorbed and others reflected. The reflected spectrum can reveal properties of its atmosphere, dust and surface minerals. The light is evidence of the body, not a replacement for it.


4. Planets also emit thermal radiation


Any object above absolute zero emits thermal electromagnetic radiation. Planets absorb energy and radiate energy, much of it at infrared wavelengths invisible to human eyes.


Thus the statement “planets only reflect light” is a useful elementary contrast with stars, but it is not physically exhaustive.


Planets can:


reflect visible and other radiation;

emit infrared thermal radiation;

produce radio emissions;

display atmospheric lightning or aurorae;

in some circumstances show localized visible emissions.


Nevertheless, their ordinary naked-eye brightness is principally reflected sunlight.


V. Independent evidence that planets are physical bodies


A common alternative-cosmology response is that evidence from space agencies cannot be trusted. The strongest answer is not simply to demand trust in an institution. It is to show that planetary reality is supported by independent and repeatable evidence.


1. Telescopic disks


Stars ordinarily remain unresolved point-like sources in small telescopes because of their immense distances. Several planets can be resolved into disks.


Venus shows phases. Mars shows a disk and changing surface or atmospheric features. Jupiter shows a disk, cloud bands and transiting moon shadows. Saturn displays rings extending around an oblate globe.


A point of light may be optical appearance at low resolution. Greater resolving power reveals spatial extension.


2. Planetary phases


Venus and Mercury display phases because they orbit the Sun inside Earth’s orbit. The changing fraction of their illuminated hemispheres follows predictable geometry.


A phase is precisely what one expects from a spherical or approximately spherical body illuminated from one direction. It is not naturally explained by a permanently self-luminous point.


The full set of Venusian phases played an important historical role in testing planetary models. A claim that Venus is merely an independent light must reproduce the observed sequence, angular-size changes and positional geometry.


3. Occultations


The Moon and planets sometimes pass in front of stars or other bodies, temporarily blocking their light. An occultation demonstrates that the foreground body has angular extent and can obstruct radiation from behind it.


An immaterial light does not ordinarily block a background star. A physical body does.


4. Shadows and transits


Jupiter’s moons cast moving shadows across Jupiter’s cloud tops. Planets can transit stars, producing measurable decreases in stellar brightness. Exoplanets are frequently detected through such transit signatures, alongside other methods. NASA reports thousands of confirmed exoplanets.


A reproducible shadow or transit is evidence of an opaque or partially opaque body occupying space.


5. Gravitational effects


The positions of planets and moons follow mathematically predictable motions.


Their masses can be inferred through their effects on:


moons;

neighboring planets;

spacecraft trajectories;

orbital perturbations;

gravitational lensing in suitable cases.


A merely apparent light without mass would not produce those gravitational interactions.


6. Radar observations


Radio signals can be transmitted toward nearby planets and reflected back. Return delay gives distance; frequency shift gives relative motion; signal structure can reveal surface properties.


This does not depend on visible-light imagery. It is a different physical method yielding compatible results.


7. Spectroscopy


Planetary spectra contain absorption and emission features associated with chemical elements and molecules. Different planets produce different spectral signatures.


A generic point-light model cannot merely assert “they are lights.” It must explain why each light exhibits wavelength-dependent signatures consistent with atmospheres, clouds, surfaces, temperatures and rotational motion.


8. Parallax and orbital prediction


Observers at different locations record slightly different apparent positions. Repeated measurements allow distances and motions to be calculated.


Planetary positions, conjunctions, oppositions, transits and occultations can be predicted long in advance. These are not arbitrary animations created after the fact; they are observable geometrical consequences.


9. Amateur verification


A person does not need institutional access to verify many planetary facts.


With ordinary equipment, observers can record:


Venusian phases;

Jupiter’s disk and moons;

Saturn’s rings;

Mars’s changing angular size;

planetary occultations;

rotation of visible planetary features;

transits of Jupiter’s moons and their shadows.


The claim


“all planetary evidence comes from NASA”


is therefore false. NASA is one source among a much older and wider network of observation.


VI. Why planets can twinkle or appear unstable in videos


Some online arguments claim that zoomed footage shows planets as pulsating, watery, geometric or multicolored lights rather than bodies.


This confuses the image with the object.


1. Atmospheric turbulence


Earth’s atmosphere contains moving layers of air with changing temperature and density. These refract incoming light unpredictably, especially when an object is low on the horizon and its light passes through more atmosphere.


This can produce:


apparent motion;

color flashing;

blurring;

deformation;

scintillation.


2. Defocus


When a camera is not properly focused at infinity, a point-like or nearly point-like source becomes a large diffraction or blur pattern. Internal lens shape, aperture geometry, sensor processing and digital zoom can dominate the image.


A defocused planet is not a magnified view of the planet’s actual surface. It is a magnified view of the optical system’s response to incoming light.


3. Digital zoom


Digital zoom enlarges existing pixels. It does not create additional optical detail. Compression, sharpening and noise reduction may produce moving edges and false structures.


4. Exposure


A bright planet can saturate a camera sensor. Once pixels are overexposed, the recorded object expands into a glowing blob with lost detail.


The proper comparison is not:


“phone video versus space-agency image.”


It is:


properly focused optics;

suitable exposure;

stable tracking;

known focal length;

calibration;

repeated observation;

comparison with predicted angular size and phase.


VII. Historical language: “wandering stars”


Ancient observers distinguished several moving luminaries from the relatively fixed stellar background. The term translated “planet” is historically related to wandering.


This terminology does not prove that planets and stars are physically identical.


People classify objects by visible behavior before learning their deeper structure.


For example:


whales were historically grouped with fish in ordinary speech;

meteors were called shooting stars;

the morning star and evening star were once treated as separate appearances before being recognized as Venus;

the Sun is still said to “rise” and “set.”


Language preserves observational categories even when physical understanding becomes more precise.


“Wandering star” means approximately:


a star-like object that changes position relative to the stellar background.


It does not logically entail:


an object powered by the same internal process as a star.


VIII. Biblical analysis


1. The controlling hermeneutical principle


Scripture should be read according to its actual literary purpose, vocabulary and historical setting.


We must distinguish:


what the text explicitly states;

what can reasonably be inferred;

what later interpreters import into it.


The supplied King James Bible will be quoted below.


2. Genesis calls the Sun and Moon “lights”


“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night.”—Genesis 1:14

“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night:


he made the stars also.”—Genesis 1:16


A common argument proceeds:


  1. Genesis calls celestial bodies “lights.”
  2. Therefore celestial bodies are literally composed only of light.
  3. Planets are celestial lights.
  4. Therefore planets are immaterial lights rather than worlds.


The second premise is not in Genesis.


“Light” here can identify a created body by its visible function:


it illuminates and marks times and seasons.


The passage expressly assigns functions:


“And let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:


And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth.”—Genesis 1:14–15


The text emphasizes what the luminaries do from Earth’s perspective.


A lamp may be called a light without being composed only of light. Likewise, the Moon can be called the lesser light because it illuminates Earth at night, even though its brightness is reflected sunlight.


3. Does reflected light make Genesis scientifically wrong?


No. Genesis does not say that the Moon generates its own visible light through an internal mechanism. It says the Moon functions as the lesser light and gives light upon the earth.


Ordinary speech still says:


moonlight;

the Moon shines;

the Moon gives light;

the room is lit by a mirror.


Reflected illumination remains illumination.


NASA likewise explains that “moonlight” is reflected sunlight.


The biblical and scientific descriptions answer different questions:


  • Biblical functional description: What role does the Moon serve for earthly observers?
  • Physical explanation: From where does the visible radiation originate, and how is it reflected?


These statements are compatible.


4. “He made the stars also”


Genesis 1:16 distinguishes the two great lights from “the stars also.” It does not present a modern taxonomy of stars, planets, moons, dwarf planets and smaller bodies.


The omission of a modern planetary category proves little. Ancient audiences categorized the sky by appearance and function. Scripture did not need to provide twenty-first-century astrophysical terminology to communicate that God created and governs the heavens.


5. The Bible uses observational language


“The sun ariseth, and the sun goeth down.”—Ecclesiastes 1:5


The verse truthfully describes the observable daily cycle. It is not necessarily a technical assertion that the Sun revolves around a motionless Earth every twenty-four hours.


Modern people continue to use “sunrise” and “sunset” without denying Earth’s rotation. Phenomenological language is not deception; it is normal description from the observer’s frame of reference.


Likewise, calling planets or stars “lights” describes how they appear and function in the sky. It need not exhaust their physical nature.


6. “Lights in the firmament”


Genesis says that the lights are “in the firmament of the heaven.” Some argue that this means every celestial object is embedded in a nearby solid dome.


Several points must be separated.


First, the English word firmament reflects a traditional translation. The Hebrew term raqia is associated with something spread or extended. Interpretations differ over whether ancient Israelites conceived it as a solid vault, an expanse, or language accommodating ordinary observation.


Second, even a reconstructed ancient cosmology would not automatically become a command for Christians to reject all subsequent physical observation. Scripture’s theological affirmation is that God created, ordered and appointed the heavenly realm.


Third, the text does not specify:


the planets’ distances;

their diameters;

their chemical compositions;

that they are immaterial;

that telescopic disks are illusions;

that spacecraft evidence is fabricated;

that the heavens contain no physical worlds.


Those propositions must not be presented as quotations from Genesis.


7. The Bible’s purpose in speaking of celestial bodies


Scripture repeatedly directs worship away from celestial objects and toward their Creator:


“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”—Psalm 19:1

“To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:


The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:


The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.”—Psalm 136:7–9


The theological message is not a lesson in planetary composition. It is that the heavenly lights are created, ordered and subordinate to God.


8. Scripture rejects astral worship


“And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them.”—Deuteronomy 4:19


Whether a planet is rocky, gaseous, reflective or self-luminous does not alter this principle. Celestial objects are creatures, not gods, spiritual guides or dispensers of fate.


9. Do biblical “stars” include planets?


Ancient language could group visible celestial points according to appearance.


Jude refers to “wandering stars” metaphorically:


“Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.”—Jude 13


This verse concerns false teachers, not planetary physics. The metaphor emphasizes wandering or instability. It should not be used as a scientific definition.


Even when ancient language calls a planet a wandering star, the designation is observational. It cannot establish stellar composition.


10. Scripture does not teach that the Earth is the only substantial celestial world


The Bible focuses on Earth and humanity because it tells the history of creation, fall, covenant and redemption culminating in Christ. That narrative focus does not imply that every other heavenly object is immaterial.


An author can focus on Jerusalem without denying that Babylon is a physical city. Likewise, Scripture’s earth-centered redemptive narrative does not settle every question of planetary geology.


IX. Logical evaluation


Argument A: “We see planets as lights; therefore they are only lights”


This is a form of appearance–reality confusion.


Comparable arguments would be:


  • A distant mountain appears blue; therefore it is made of blue.
  • An airplane appears as a moving light; therefore it has no wings or fuselage.
  • A ship appears as a point on the horizon; therefore it has no spatial extension.
  • A microscopic bacterium appears as a dot; therefore it has no internal structure.


Low angular resolution conceals structure. It does not eliminate it.


Argument B: “The Bible calls heavenly bodies lights; therefore modern planetary science is false”


This equivocates between:


light as a luminary or source of illumination;

light as electromagnetic radiation;

light as an object’s entire material constitution.


Genesis uses functional, earth-oriented language. The conclusion adds a physical claim that the verse does not make.


Argument C: “Ancient people called planets wandering stars; therefore planets are stars”


This is an etymological or historical-category fallacy.


Words do not permanently bind modern classification to ancient observational categories. “Atom” originally meant indivisible, yet atoms contain smaller components. “Planet” once included objects now classified differently.


Argument D: “Planet photographs are edited; therefore planets are not physical bodies”


The premise may refer to real image processing, but the conclusion does not follow.


Astronomical images are commonly processed to:


combine exposures;

assign visible colors to nonvisible wavelengths;

correct instrumental noise;

enhance contrast;

assemble mosaics;

reveal scientifically relevant features.


Processing does not automatically mean invention. Medical scans, microscope images and weather radar are also processed.


The correct question is whether the processing is documented, reproducible and consistent with raw measurements—not whether any processing occurred.


Argument E: “Institutions have lied before; therefore their planetary claims are false”


This is a non sequitur.


Institutions can lie. Therefore their claims require scrutiny. But past dishonesty does not make every present assertion false.


Moreover, planetary astronomy predates modern space agencies and is independently practiced worldwide. Rejecting all observations would require a vastly larger explanatory hypothesis than showing that one institution has sometimes acted deceptively.


Argument F: “I can see only a light, so no one has proved a body exists”


This improperly restricts knowledge to unaided personal perception.


No person directly sees:


atoms;

the core of Earth;

radio waves;

the far side of every mountain;

historical events before his birth.


Knowledge can be rationally grounded through instruments, causal effects, repeated prediction, testimony and converging independent evidence.


The biblical writers likewise accepted reliable testimony:


“In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.”—2 Corinthians 13:1


The principle is not blind trust but corroboration.


X. Psychological and rhetorical analysis


This section evaluates the form and possible function of the comment, not the commenter’s mental health or hidden motives.


A three-word statement cannot justify diagnosing paranoia, narcissism, delusion or any other condition.


1. Compression creates authority


“Planets are lights” is delivered as a declaration rather than an argument.


The brevity can create an impression of:


certainty;

simplicity;

recovered obviousness;

freedom from technical complication;

access to a truth others have overthought.


A long explanation sounds disputable. A short aphorism can feel self-evident.


2. Semantic ambiguity protects the claim


Because “light” has multiple meanings, the sentence can shift under criticism.


When challenged scientifically:


“I did not say they have no substance.


I said they are lights.”


When supported by a radical-cosmology audience:


“Exactly—NASA’s ‘worlds’ are only luminaries.”


The ambiguity allows a speaker to receive credit for the stronger implication while defending only the weaker proposition.


3. Visual intuition is given priority over mediated knowledge


The claim appeals to immediate experience:


“Look up.


They are plainly lights.”


Direct observation feels epistemically pure, whereas telescopes, mathematics, spectroscopy and institutional reports feel mediated.


Yet unaided sight is limited. Scientific instruments are not substitutes for observation; they extend observation. Eyeglasses, microscopes and radio receivers all mediate reality without necessarily falsifying it.


4. Simplicity can become a suspicion trigger


An alternative narrative may reason:


the public explanation is complicated;

the immediate appearance is simple;

elites benefit from complexity;

therefore the complicated explanation is deception.


But reality is not obligated to be intuitively simple. A scientifically accurate explanation may be complex because the phenomena are complex.


5. Identity signaling


Given the previously examined profile—“Gnosis,” “Conspiracies,” “Satan’s Little Season,” and an anti-consensus quotation—the sentence may operate as an identity signal:


  • I reject institutional cosmology.
  • I trust revealed or recovered knowledge.
  • I see through mass deception.
  • I align with an awakened minority.
  • I read Scripture more literally than mainstream Christians.


This is an inference from context, not proof of personal motive.


6. The appeal of hidden simplicity


The sentence may offer a gratifying reversal:


Experts claim to know vast worlds millions of miles away, but the truth is visible to anyone:


they are simply lights.


This structure grants the believer epistemic independence. Specialized expertise becomes evidence of deception, while lack of technical training becomes almost a virtue.


That emotional or social appeal does not prove the belief false. Explaining why a claim is attractive is not the same as refuting it. The claim remains false or true according to evidence.


7. An unfalsifiable framework


A belief becomes methodologically dangerous when every possible outcome confirms it:


clear planetary disk: manipulated optics;

blurry light: proof it is only a luminary;

spacecraft telemetry: fabricated;

amateur observation: contaminated by official assumptions;

independent agreement: coordinated deception;

lack of agreement: hidden suppression.


A framework that allows no conceivable disconfirmation cannot reliably distinguish truth from error.


Scripture commends testability rather than immunity from testing:


“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”—1 Thessalonians 5:21


8. Contrarianism and special knowledge


Because the profile explicitly invokes “Gnosis” and says universal truth is not measured by mass appeal, the comment may derive rhetorical strength from opposition itself.


The valid premise is:


Majority belief does not create truth.


The invalid inversion is:


Therefore a rejected or marginalized claim is more likely to be true.


Neither popularity nor unpopularity establishes cosmology.


XI. The strongest charitable interpretation


The most charitable reading is:


“From the human observer’s standpoint, planets are among the lights visible in the sky.”


That is unobjectionable.


Scripture, ordinary language and astronomy can all accommodate it:


  • Scripture describes heavenly luminaries by their visible function.
  • Ordinary observers see planets as bright objects.
  • Astronomy explains that their visible brightness is principally reflected sunlight.


Under this reading, no rebuttal is necessary beyond adding precision.


A scientifically and biblically responsible expansion would be:


“Planets appear as heavenly lights because they reflect sunlight, but the light we see comes from physically extended created bodies.”


XII. The strongest likely alternative-cosmology interpretation


The more controversial reading is:


“What modern astronomy calls planets are not distant physical worlds; they are nearby celestial lights or luminaries, just as a literal reading of Genesis supposedly teaches.”


This interpretation fails for four principal reasons.


1. It mistakes functional description for material composition


Genesis calls the Moon a light because it gives light. The word does not say that the Moon lacks mass or substance.


2. It cannot explain converging observations


Planetary phases, disks, occultations, spectra, shadows, gravitational interactions, radar returns and predictable orbital geometry point to physical bodies.


3. It depends on expanding a conspiracy without proportionate evidence


The proposed deception would have to encompass centuries of astronomers, rival nations, independent observatories, commercial systems, universities and countless amateur observers.


Large conspiracies are not logically impossible, but the required evidence must grow with the scale and complexity of the allegation.

A scientific model must do more than redescribe appearance. It must predict observations.


XV. Rebuttal in direct form

Planets certainly appear as lights in the sky, and their visible brightness is principally reflected sunlight. But “appears as a light” does not mean “is nothing but light.” Through telescopes, planets display resolved disks, phases, atmospheres, rotation, shadows, occultations and predictable orbital motion. A lamp is a light without being composed only of light; likewise, a planet can be a heavenly light while also being a substantial created world.
